Biography

Joanna Jowett is an artist, writer and producer based in Leeds.

Joanna Jowett's interdisciplinary practice includes the use of performance, print, photography, writing and publishing to explore the detail of personal and local experiences to reflect on and question the wider social, environmental and political landscapes we live in. Her work and research aims to question the power dynamics between the written and the visual, the published/unpublished, heard/unheard, and the edges of what is public/private, exploring the soft and vulnerable parts of being human.

With a background in Performing Arts she has worked within the arts for over 15 years for organisations including Leeds Playhouse, Opera North and Leeds Arts University. Since 2015 she has worked in a freelance capacity as a Producer/Marketing and PR Manager and Evaluation Consultant within the arts alongside her practice. Joanna is Co-Director of COPY, an artists publishing platform delivering writing and publishing projects alongside Charlotte Morgan.

Together with fellow artist and writer Pamela Crowe, Joanna is a FailSpace champion, delivering workshops and sharing the findings of FailSpace (an AHRC research project led by University of Leeds and Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh) on how the cultural sector can better recognise, acknowledge and learn from failure. Joanna is also a project team member of the East Leeds Project and 23 Press
